"... Brilliant writing. One of the best scripts I have seen staged for a while... This is a script of excellence. Sibuyiselo Dywili is the writer and he performs in this harrowing two-hander. It is a story of pain, violence, self-loathing, gender violence, the quest of forgiveness, acceptance; self love; healing. It is about family and friendship and the ties that bind us and keep us apart. It's a play about us and it's a play about everyone; everywhere. It's graphic. Unflinchingly graphic. Watch out for the suitcase scene. Listen to the nervous laughter of the audience. It is funny - until it's not. Superb performances by Sibuyiselo Dywili and Siyamthanda Bangani and consummate direction by Siphenathi Siqwayi."

Synopsis
Descending into a pitiful state of drunkenness and despair, here we meet Can - not Can Themba, not Mr. Can Themba, just Can - sparkling with energy, wit and intelligence, wildly verbose, passionate, charming and broken. Can introduces us to The House of Truth, his home in amongst the rubble of Sophiatown where writers, artists and intellectuals, of all hues, meet over copious amounts of alcohol to battle ideas, opinions and philosophy in search of enlightenment, truth and freedom. All the while, Can is awaiting a letter from the Department of Education, hoping to have it recognize his teaching degree from Fort Hare University so that he may pursue his career as teacher and provide for his family. The House of Truth is written by Dr Siphiwo Mahala, who has been a careful and thorough researcher of the life and writings of Can Themba.

For this performance, Sbuja earned a nomination for best solo performer at the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards. It was this performance that he won the Peter Hayes Award for Best Actor category in 2022.
“It is a rare gem of a play that sweeps you completely off your feet. I was swept. A matinee performance of The House of Truth, in between sessions of load shedding, on a Saturday afternoon, took my breath away, left me speechless and moved me to tears. This impeccably written one-man play is layered with words, emotion, bitterness, history, politics, pain and bloody minded creative character, and Sbuja Dywili embodies the spirit of Can Themba completely. This young man portrays the complex, sophisticated, despairing, hilarious, crude, frustrated, passionate, outrageous, alcoholic, genius Can Temba so perfectly that the line between character and performer is totally erased. I felt like I was there, in the house of truth, listening to this man in another time and place. ”

“Sibuyiselo Dywili activates the stage with an electrifying performance as Can Themba who was eccentric, maverick,non-conformist, principled, passionate, outspoken, impeccably stylish and urbane- and a lot more. This could have been a static monologue of solo performance but in the hands of this team, the production grooves – like a jazz event in Sophiatown.”
